Design-ism

Design-ism is a game that utilizes key elements of art and design movements to educate art and design principles and history through gameplay.  Design-ism: Swiss Edition specifically leans into the ideas, philosophies, and visuals of the Swiss Style ( or International Style) of design. Swiss style design sought to reach neutrality and create universal design by prioritizing economy, readability, and objectivity, building stronger connections globally. It is a team game where one player aims to build a composition that visually expresses a prompt using a grid, shapes, and colors, while another player attempts to guess it. This is determined by rolling the die provided in the box.

The purpose of Design-ism is to strengthen visual literacy through gameplay.  Visual elements, like color, shape, and rhythm, are a universal language.  Understanding how these elements operate and “speak” allows for better communication and understanding.  By studying different art and design movements, players are able to understand and practice these methods through play.  The Swiss Edition highlights 13 designers from the movement.

The solution is a brand system and an operating game system that utilizes Swiss-style principles, creativity, accessibility, and play.  The basic branding of Design-ism can be applied to different editions of the game that are based on other art and design movements by changing the color palette. Members of this team collaborated closely on formulating the function of the game, design of physical pieces, and production. I specifically worked on planning the project timeline, branding, and the production of the cards and boards. The Swiss Edition contains a collection of cards, dice, shapes, grids, and prompt lists for team gameplay.
